The Clearwater River watershed is a culturally significant and economically important area that provides fish, timber, and wildlife resources for the Quinault Indian Nation (QIN), Washington State, and local stakeholders. Productivity of Clearwater River salmon populations, specifically coho salmon due to their utilization of a broad range of habitat types throughout their freshwater life history, serves as a good indicator of freshwater habitat conditions and overall watershed health. An overall goal for the Clearwater River watershed is to restore or enhance natural salmon habitat forming processes to improve the resiliency and productivity of natural salmon populations for harvest in both tribal and non-tribal fisheries. An interagency habitat restoration workgroup led by the Quinault Department of Fisheries was established in 2017 to begin rehabilitating salmon habitat in the Clearwater River watershed. The mission of the work group is to assess, design, and implement instream and riparian habitat rehabilitation projects to restore ‘normative levels’ of habitat conditions in the actively managed river and tributary stream corridors of the Clearwater River watershed. To inform restoration needs on the mainstem Clearwater River and better understand the Clearwater River’s fluvial processes and historical evolution, the Quinault Department of Fisheries requested technical services from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation Technical Service Center to conduct a hydrologic, hydraulic, and geomorphic assessment along the mainstem Clearwater River corridor. The purpose of the study is to assess and document historical and current geomorphic conditions and model current hydraulic conditions in the mainstem Clearwater River corridor. The study results will provide baseline data to inform QIN efforts to identify habitat impairments, prioritize river corridor segments for site-specific and reach-scale restoration actions, and develop restoration plan designs for instream and floodplain habitats.",

We conducted hydraulic modeling along approximately 20.5 river miles of the Clearwater River using 14 single-inlet discharge flows as well as flood flows that exhibit increasing discharge with distance downstream, for the 2-yr, 5-yr, 10-yr, 25-yr, and 50-yr recurrence interval median peak flow discharge based upon flow frequency analysis. The model output includes attributes for depth, velocity, shear stress, and Froude number, offering the ability to assess potential restoration areas based on hydraulic thresholds relevant to specific goals. The hydraulic modeling results are available at https://data.usbr.gov/catalog/8042/item/133852. In addition to hydraulic modeling, we conducted geomorphic mapping from 1939 to 2017 and to identify historical channels, bars, and landslides along the mainstem Clearwater River. The geomorphic mapping shapefiles are available at https://data.usbr.gov/catalog/8042/item/133851. This work is part of a larger geomorphic analysis and hydraulic modeling study on the Clearwater River. The Quinault Indian Nation Department of Fisheries requested assistance from the Sedimentation and River Hydraulics Group in Reclamation’s Technical Service Center (TSC) to conduct a geomorphic and hydraulic assessment for 26-miles of the mainstem Clearwater River corridor in Washington State. The purpose of the study is to assess and document both historical and current geomorphic and hydraulic conditions in the mainstem Clearwater River corridor, identify habitat impairments, develop restoration alternatives and objectives, and help identify and prioritize river corridor segments for site-specific and reach scale restoration actions. Study results will also be used to information restoration plan designs for instream and floodplain habitats and to assess risks and potential impacts to property owners and the Clearwater community. Staff from the TSC’s Geographic Applications and Analysis Group were tasked with assembling three dates of digitally scanned historical aerial film into photo mosaics that are all georeferenced to a common projection. The aerial photos are from the 1980s, 1950s, and 1930s.",

This work is part of a larger geomorphic analysis and hydraulic modeling study on the Clearwater River. This baseline data on geomorphic channel change supports efforts to prioritize reaches for river restoration and floodplain reconnection. Based on the geomorphic mapping, we interpret that lateral river migration leads to the disconnection of historical geomorphic units from the active geomorphic corridor but also creates new geomorphic units near meander bends. There is an overall decrease in bare alluvium and less dynamic lateral channel movement between 1980 and 2017. Reconnecting formerly active channels, which were part of the active geomorphic corridor as recently as 2006, could create access to new habitat away from the mainstem channel. The geomorphic mapping effort is documented in Technical Report No. ENV-2023-099: Geomorphic Analysis and Hydraulic Modeling on the Clearwater River in Western Washington, which is available at https://data.usbr.gov/catalog/8042/item/133840.",
